The Matterhorn
DOCUMENTED RESULT
Strong primary or authoritative evidence supports the connection.
A real mountain became a Disney mountain in less than a year.
What Walt encountered
Walt was in Switzerland during production work connected with Third Man on the Mountain and experienced the Matterhorn at Zermatt.
What Disney built
Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland on 14 June 1959.
Where it reaches Walt Disney World
- Connection
- No direct WDW counterpart
Walt Disney World has no Matterhorn. The record shows the Disneyland result and stops there, unless stronger evidence connects a specific Walt Disney World attraction to this trip.
Pictures the house holds
Every picture below is held by this house. Each one says what it shows, why it belongs to this story, and which document and page it came from, so a reader can go and look at the sheet rather than take the caption's word for it.

A full-colour period illustration sheet: a bobsled running down a snow-capped mountain, and Skyway buckets passing through an ice cavern. The printed captions read 'Racing in streamlined MATTERHORN BOBSLEDS, Disneyland '59 guests speed down and around the slopes of the Matterhorn, gliding to a halt at the bottom in a glacier lake' and 'the already popular Swiss SKYWAY offers Disneyland '59 visitors a breathtaking journey through GLACIER GROTTO as the SKYWAY cars travel through the MATTERHORN.'
Mouse Museum scan img013.jpg · single sheet
The record carries no date for this artifact, and none is assigned here.
Mouse Museum scan, harvested 15 Sept 2026, local file ...\uploads\2017\03\img013.jpg. OCR of this exact file is indexed in the house vault (corpus 'mousemuseum') and matches the printed captions.
This is the documented park result the story names -- Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland -- shown in Disney's own period art rather than a crowd-sourced photograph. The story already states plainly that Walt Disney World has no Matterhorn; this image does not change that and must not be captioned as a Walt Disney World result.
What the house holds
The local documents describe the Disneyland attraction, including its stated scale against the mountain itself, and they record the absence of a Florida counterpart being asked about at the time. Neither speaks to the 1958 trip.
“Mountain - is made of steel and concrete and landscaped at base, “snow” is color impregnated cement. Height - 140 ft. from loading area to peak. Scale 1/100 actual size of Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland.”
QuotedDisneyland: Where You Leave Today....and Visit the World of Yesterday · page 89 · UCF Harrison Price Papers · corpus buzzprice · no date in the record
The record carries no date for this document.
A specification sheet, not a story: the attraction is stated as a hundredth-scale version of the mountain. The stated ratio is the document’s, and is not independently checked here. Retrieval trap: this row’s title is stored in the vault with a trailing space, so an exact title=? lookup silently returns nothing — see 'vault_title' above.
“ducking through a large papier-mache mountain called the Matterhorn, which turns out to be hollow and full of bobsleds”
QuotedWalt Disney World: Background and Philosophy · page 80 · UCF Harrison Price Papers · corpus buzzprice · 1967-09-21
Dated 21 September 1967 on the STARS cover page.
The quotation stops where the scan does: the next word reads “daning” on disk. It is left out rather than repaired.
field_record reads the word "matterhorn" as proof that a passage is about California and throws it away. That is right for a Field File and wrong here: the mountain and the bobsleds are the story.

No point at Walt Disney World is pinned for this story. Where the record does not carry a descendant that can be stood in front of, none is invented.
The map is drawn by a mapping library loaded from another host. Every point it shows is printed above it as text, so with scripts off this page loses a picture of a map and nothing else.

Every public story stays tied to its evidence. Research links are kept here, and documents held locally are named with their page so a reader can ask for the sheet. Crowd-sourced encyclopedias are not a source in this ledger.
How to read the evidence
- Documented
- Strong primary or authoritative evidence supports the connection.
- Conflicting chronology
- Multiple credible accounts disagree on date or sequence.
- Open question
- The visit or object is real; the claimed influence still needs proof.
- Built, then abandoned
- Disney built it, and the future went another direction.
Quotations from scanned documents close line-end hyphens and render line breaks as spaces. Nothing else is altered. Passages that do not read cleanly are cited rather than quoted. The raw on-disk reading is printed beside every one of those quotations so the repair can be checked rather than trusted. A passage carried straight out of the corpus is printed exactly as it sits on disk and nothing is closed up: a word broken across a column stays broken.
The corpus read for these pages is F:\DEEPVAULT\_index\vault.sqlite (FTS5 table 'vault', 23,961 rows, read-only). quote_ok is true only where the reading is clean enough to put in front of a reader. No passage is ever tidied up, because a corrected quote is an invented one. A passage that is not quotable is still cited — document, date, page — and the reader is told the sheet is a scan.
